Jeremiah 1:5 - Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you...
On Jan 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court decided that a woman’s right to privacy under the 14 amendment extended to include a woman’s decision to have an abortion. Such a decision horribly, tragically failed to consider the massive consequences that would follow such as:
1. Abortion on demand totally dismisses the right to life for the unborn baby within the mother’s womb. The right to life surely overrides the right to privacy. In fact, any individual within the US who has potentially threatened or who has actually taken the life of another person who lives outside of the womb automatically loses his/her privacy. Why is life in the womb of less value than life outside the womb?
2. Abortion on demand attempts to draw an arbitrary line between viability outside the womb at 7 months and inviability previous to 7 months, which inevitably has to argue that life is not life until it reaches viability. This is nonsense as well since most everyone would agree that if a pregnant woman is killed at 6 months of pregnancy and she wanted her child, 2 murders have occured, not just one.
3. This in itself proves that life is now determined by whether or not the mother wishes to have the child, not scientific evidence which proves through ultrasound and other means that life begins at conception.
4. Abortion on demand, while alleging to trumpet the rights of women, has actually devalued the rights of women by failing to take into account how many women would be pressured by their boyfriends and their parents to abort their babies that they in fact would wish to keep.
5. It also failed to consider the post-abortive trauma and guilt that both mothers and fathers would endure for a lifetime.
6. It failed to consider that selective abortions would dramatically increase due to scientific advance. The Guttmacher Institute, a pro-abortion research group, reports that 92 percent of abortions in the US have nothing to do with rape or incest or the health of the mother. This means they are simply a matter of perceived or persuaded convenience. For example, 90% of unborn children diagnosed with Down’s syndrome are aborted. And with the advance of pregnancy testing now available, any slight disorder detected or even possible, not proven, just possible, has become a reason for parents to abort. Basically, if a child is not exactly perfect or doesn't measure up to our idea of perfect or will increase the parent’s responsibility to care and love that child, he is deemed not worthy of life.
The result of such a wrong-headed, wrong-reasoned decision has been the death of 57 million boys and girls since 1973. Life has been grossly devalued upon the altars of convenience, privacy, and deception. The death toll attributed to Roe v Wade is simply staggering.
As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is Life and Salvation, we must never tire of speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves. We must never tire of reaching out to troubled, frightened, pressured, or deceived mothers. We must never tire of offering forgiveness, healing, and salvation in Christ. And pastors, we MUST stop being so silent!!
