Misconception #1 - Evangelism Is a Program

“So Boyd…in this ‘new’ church where the families sit together and you don’t have programs, how do you evangelize?” I’ve heard that several times and anticipate hearing it again. It’s one of the most common questions I get as a pastor of a FIC. However, the question though is foundationally wrong. The assumption is that evangelism is a program. I found another pastor whose comments on programs and evangelism agrees.

Chr is Castaldo, pastor of community outreach and church planting at College Church in Wheaton, Illinois: "How do you spell 'evangelism?' For many, if we’re honest, it is spelled “programs”—a guest evangelist in the pulpit, Vacation Bible School, Christmas concerts, and the like."

But evangelism is not a program, any more than prayer, tithing, or holiness is. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He didn’t leave us with a program, but instead a command to “GO!” A command that functions without ever becoming a program in a church. Evangelism is a matter of our love for the Lord and our obedience to Him. But it’s not a scheduled program!
