Heading to the Polls - Hoping in Christ!

The presidential debates have ended and November 6 is right around the corner. Now that President Obama and Governor Romney have been asked some questions, as believers, we need to ask ourselves a few questions before we head to the poles.

Shouldn't we exercise this great privilege and take part in the political process as a witness of being in this world but not of it?

Should we be guided by our pockets, by political affiliation, or by principles of Scripture?

Each election season is crucial in its own way because certain decisions will be made that impact the future, such as appointing Supreme Court justices, and certain ideas will be trumpeted. Ideas have consequences. Therefore, it is always important for believers to be involved and to be governed by our convictions. Read carefully the following words from Billy Graham,

"On November 6, the day before my 94th birthday, our nation will hold one of the most critical elections in my lifetime. We are at a crossroads and there are profound moral issues at stake. I strongly urge you to vote for candidates who support the biblical definition of marriage between a man and woman, protect the sanctity of life, and defend our religious freedoms. The Bible speaks clearly on these crucial issues. Please join me in praying for America, that we will turn our hearts back toward God."

I agree totally, especially with the last sentence! Yes, we need to vote on Nov 6, and yes, we need to vote according to the biblical understanding of the issues of our day. As important and crucial as those actions are, the state of our nation is a state of the hearts of its people not the party or party agenda sitting in the White House.

We will vote on Nov 6, and we will vote for truth because only truth truly sets people free. However, on Nov 7, we will not be disillusioned and hopeless if our candidate loses and we will not be at rest and confident if our candidate wins! On the contrary, after voting on Nov 6, we will continue to pray, live the Gospel, share the Gospel, and hope in God on Nov 7 and until the return of our Savior, who will reign in righteousness upon the earth!!

We are citizens of two countries; temporary citizens of America and eternal citizens of the Kingdom of God. We take both privileges seriously understanding that it is our eternal citizenship that informs our temporal one. Our eternal citizenship guides our participation in our temporary citizenship. Our eternal citizenship stands above our temporal citizenship. Therefore, the temporary never causes us to lose or misplace our hope, and the eternal never persuades us to retreat from shining the glory of God in all that we do! (That includes voting)

Head to the polls with biblical conviction on Nov 6, and hope in Christ always!!!
