Last Trip to Skynet

Once again, I'm reporting in "direct" from the skynet. The email at the Golden Guest (meaning mptmail) is simply so delayed that it actually makes sense for me to come all the way to the Dagon Centre to send email. Otherwise the delay is anywhere from two to three days. Apparently my mptmail from Tuesday takes until Saturday to get to the US. Ah well, this is so much better than when Adoniram and Anne Judson came to what was then Burma and found it took months for their letters to reach each other. But sooner is still better.

We have accomplished 100% of what I came here to do. I was a little bit disappointed at first that I did not get to teach in RBI, but the lack of a translator plus the shortness of any additional time really dictates against it. I'll simply save my notes on the Pastoral Epistles for another trip sometime in the future.

Here is a rundown on what remains to be done. Dr. Thang Bwee will be back in Myanmar, DV, on the 20th March. At that time he will go over the work that the Karen brothers have done and make sure it passes muster on all counts. Then the Karen brothers (Saw brothers) will go over it one last time just to make sure anything that Thang Bwee did to the words in his final revision did not turn it into musical "nonsense." Thus we should have a Psalter ready for the printer sometime around the middle of April (hottest part of the hot season here) at the latest.

Inflation is so high here that our publishing costs estimate will likely be no good at that time, but when we exchange dollars for kyats at that time, we should also get a "better" rate, so the inflation should not hurt us too badly. To give an idea of how bad the local inflation is, when I first came to Yangon in late 2000 the exhange was 350:1 (Kyats to dollars). The rate today is very close to 1200:1 and shows no indication of stabilizing, either.

Please see previous blogs if you would like to help with this project. They will give you an address where we can be contacted.

All God's blessings,

Dr. Bacon
