TWO BURNINGS Leviticus 16: 23-31
The Burnt Offering (Leviticus 16: 23-25) On the Day of Atonement, as on other days, the High Priest offering the burnt-offering of the people typifies Christ who offered himself to God on behalf of his people. God demands from his children a pure and holy life, faithfulness and thanksgiving, giving God all glory in absolute perfection. Christ is that perfect obedience and offering which rises up to God as smoke, well-pleasing and accepted of God (Hebrews 9: 14.) The fat of the sin offering was burned upon the altar with the burnt offering. Fat makes a sweet smell when burned. Outside of faith in Christ, the sinner's offerings rise up to God an abomination. But these sinners coming to the High Priest, offering the lamb for a burnt offering which he offered up on their behalf, is a picture of faith in Christ our Lamb, our burnt offering, whose offering rises up to God a sweet smelling savor (Ephesians 5:2.)
The Burning Without the Camp (Leviticus 16: 27) True holiness, true separation, is to be separated through faith in Christ (Acts 26: 18.) Faith in Christ means the believer leaves our former camp, bearing reproach from those who yet remain in that former camp (Hebrews 13: 11-15; Matthew 10: 37.) When God abides in us through his Spirit he separates us from unbelievers, from unrighteousness, from darkness, from Belial, from infidels, and from idols through faith in Christ. God gives us a fear of God whereas before we feared only men who made us succumb to man's pressure. But when God writes his promises in our hearts, the promise that he will receive us, the promise that he will be a Father unto us and that we are his sons and daughters in our Elder Brother, then God makes a sinner willing to go to Christ without the camp, willing to bear the same reproach from men which was cast upon our Savior. It is the fruit of Christ in you, the purifying whereby the believer has been made perfectly holy in Christ (2 Corinthians 6: 14-18; 7: 1.)
The Revelation of Christ's Finished Work in the Heart (Leviticus 16: 29-31.) When God visits his redeemed in the season of his love, he will make you to behold Christ Jesus has made perfect atonement and God now accepts you. When this gospel revelation is given to you then the gospel of Christ shall be a statute for ever unto you. Three things are sure to happen. First, the believer shall repentant from dead works to faith in Christ Jesus who finished the work (Leviticus 16: 29.) Secondly, we shall glory only in Christ Jesus who finished the work (Leviticus 16: 30.) Thirdly, Christ Jesus will become our eternal Sabbath of rest (Leviticus 16: 31; Hebrews 4: 9-11.)
All the work of the High Priest and in the offerings God declares the acceptance of his people is complete and finished by the victorious work of Christ Jesus the Lord. Christ is the believer's Wisdom for God promised that by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many (Isaiah 53: 11.) Christ is the believer's Righteousness for God hath made him sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him (2 Corinthians 5: 21.) Christ is the believer's Sanctification for both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one (Hebrews 2: 11.) Christ is the believer's full Redemption for we are bought with a price and we are not our own (1 Corinthians 7: 23.) We are in Christ and Christ is made all unto us by God, that we should glory in him, not ourselves. (1 Corinthians 1: 30, 31.)
May God grant you repentance from working for acceptance with God, that you might rest perpetually in Christ Jesus our Sabbath, in whom the believer is righteous and holy. Satisfaction has been made!
NOT HOLDING THE HEAD Paul Mahan is pastor of Central Grace Church in Rocky Mount, Va. And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God (Col. 2:19).
It is a clear commentary upon someone’s religion when they are more interested in talking about their own thoughts and opinions; their will, wants and wishes; their denominational beliefs, church creeds, discipline, traditions, rules and practices, rather than the Word of God. The apostle Paul said these are those who are, "NOT HOLDING THE HEAD" (Col. 2:19), but would rather talk about the body (church). "But you have not so learned Christ." Those who have truly seen the "Glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ," are altogether taken up with Him; with His person, and His work. While the conversation of the mere professor of religion is of his religion, the speech of the true "Christian" is of His CHRIST!
THE DINNER BELL David Eddmenson is pastor of Sovereign Grace Church, New Caney, Texas. I recently went to an auction where there was a triangle dinner bell for sale. The auctioneer began to ring it again and again. After a few seconds, I must confess that it got a little irritating and monotonous as it rang the same note over and over. Not several notes, not two notes, but the same note again and again. When he stopped and the auction proceeded, I realized, that is exactly what God’s preachers do week after week. They sound clearly the one note of the Gospel, Jesus Christ and Him Crucified. Has that one note become irritating and monotonous to you like the dinner bell did to me? I bet that dinner bell was a sweet sound to those who were hungry and called to dinner by the sound of that one note. Revelation 19:9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb.
