Love Your Pastor!
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2008

October has been named "Pastor Appreciation Month." It is fitting that one month is set aside to make sure our shepherds know how grateful we are for their labor of love. Pastors, who are called by God and take their calling serious, are the hardest working, most underpaid members of our society. From office hours to committee meetings to outreach, hospital, and member visitation to planning to sermon preparation to counseling to leading worship to sermon delivery etc., etc. - the work is never done! Take it from one who preaches on occasion - sermon preparation is never done! It is constantly rolling in your mind and heart until it is delivered, and then it hangs around a little longer! Not to mention, the unannounced emergency or late night phone consultations! The pastorate is a most taxing occupation!

For those of us who are church members, it is especially gratifying to sit under the teaching of a man who (1) meets the qualifications of a pastor found in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1, (2) determines to deliver the truths of God's Word without compromise, and (3) demonstrates a Spirit-filled life.

Make no mistake about it - pastors are not perfect people! They are in a progress of sanctification just like the rest of us! They are going to sin. They are going to struggle with habits and attitudes. They will misstep at times. Remember though, they not only teach from the pulpit, they teach from their lives as well. Maybe the most powerful sermons come from our observations of how they deal with their own struggles and sins! They spend their lives giving grace when it is needed - give it back when they are in need!

What sets pastors apart from us as lay people is that they have been set apart by God to lead and shepherd His people. For that reason alone, we are to love, respect, pray for, and follow their leadership. I don't mean blind acceptance. We are to search the Scriptures ourselves, and we must hold our leaders accountable for heretical teaching or immoral behavior. Other than those issues, however, we are to support our pastors and heed their instructions for us.

This is a great time to encourage your pastor for his endless ministry to the saints. I just sent a little gift yesterday to my pastor just to let him know he is appreciated! Don't let October go by without doing the same! Love your pastor!
