First, it is good to remind ourselves what the Lord has done for us. Joshua 4:7, “then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.”
Christ instituted the Lord’s Supper, so that we’d have this blessed remembrance of his death upon the cross - what he accomplished in salvation, and what he has freely given us. 1 Corinthians 11:24-25, "and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."" He laid down his life, so that we could be blessed, and he thanked God for it.
Likewise, let us remind our children. Let’s train them up diligently and teach them the Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 6:4 - "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." Our job is not to let them decide. God commands all men to repent. Our job is to show them the way by our actions and lifestyle… to live so that they see that Christ is glorious.
Let us be reminded, and remind others. Remember his mercies towards you, and tell those who are yet to understand the way of salvation - that he dried up the river of wrath, so that we could pass over… he gave us salvation freely, because he took away our sins, and there’s no more condemnation.
Secondly, let us pass over in haste! Joshua 4:10, “For the priests bearing the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that the LORD commanded Joshua to tell the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua. The people passed over in haste.”
Salvation is free, but today is the day. Hebrews 3:7, - "Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, "Today, if you hear his voice," If you and I hear his voice, we’re to come to him now. Let us not dally, as if we’ll get to it, but something else is more important now. We don’t know if we’ll be alive tomorrow… or if Christ will return… but we know that salvation is precious, and this life is our only shot. In hell, the rich man could not get out. He couldn’t even warn his brothers. Once the door is shut, mercy is gone forever.
Many on earth have been reprobated. John 12:36 - "While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.’ When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them." They walk in darkness, and they don’t care. There was a time when Christ was near them. They saw his power and heard his voice. Now, he’s near them no more. This happens to societies and individuals. Squandering the gospel by delay is one of the chief tactics of Satan. He tells you, “Tomorrow, after you are rich, and after you are married… after you’ve had your fun,” etc, but the gospel you could have believed today… you know it is true… will not press you tomorrow. This is God’s reprobation, where we’re made blind by refusing to see.
Take heed today and receive the gospel. Don’t delay.
Thirdly, we have knowledge so we can fear the Lord. Joshua 4:24, “so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, that you may fear the LORD your God forever.”
Knowledge serves a serious purpose: it is not merely for talking about theology; it is for obedience and putting the gospel into practice; it is for service, and fleeing from sin.
Is your knowledge fruitful, or are you squandering the light on frivolity? Is God someone to be obeyed, or merely argued about?
Let us fear the Lord, and it will keep us from sin. Fear him by going to him, saying, “Lord, keep me from sin at all cost. Nothing in my life is more important than obeying you. Give me the grace, because of the blood of Jesus.”
The same God who dried up the sea and the river of condemnation is the same One who gives us power to honor him. The gospel is so that we may love Christ forever.
