A "trump card" is a particular card or suit which ranks the highest in a card game and ensures victory for the one who possesses it. God has granted to his people a trump card of sorts, which secures victory for them in every situation. The Apostle Paul speaks of it.
"Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And He who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom He predestined He also called, and those whom He called He also justified, and those whom He justified He also glorified." (Romans 8:26-30)
There is so much contained here, but to be brief, we see -Â
That the Holy Spirit helps saints by praying for us in the midst of our weakness and according to the will of God That, regardless of our situation or circumstance, God is working everything together for our ultimate good That it is the God-ordained destiny of the believer to become like Jesus So, every circumstance will be applied to our lives to produce the intended result, which is...Christ-likeness. We can be certain that God has predestined the conforming of His saints into Christ-likeness. In other words, it is a certain and sure work in the life of the believer. It is a work that depends upon God and not upon man. God has determined that this work will occur, and He is the One seeing to its completion. It is as we read in Philippians 1:6, "And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ."
Church, this predestination unto glorification is our "trump card". This means that, whatever card God permits the evil one to play against us (see the book of Job), He has already dealt to us the card that trumps it and the devil is playing right into God's (and our) hand. Though the card played against us may seem to be a setback to us, and many times even a significant and painful one, the card that we hold in our hand ranks higher. This is the hope which anchors our souls (Hebrews 6:19). This is the reality that compels us to press on toward the mark (Philippians 3:13-15). And this is the victory that overcomes the world - our faith (I John 5:4).
Never lose sight of your trump card. Though it may seem that you are down and out, you are not. Work diligently to submit your heart and mind to God's Word and the fact that He is conforming you into Christ-likeness and to remember that "the One who calls you is faithful; and He will do it" (I Thessalonians 5:24).
Resist the lies of the evil one. Stand on the promises of God. Remember that HE will do it!
