Take heart, dear reader, you are in good company. Moses, one of the great men God has used to accomplish His will on earth, had struggles with this, too.
So why did Moses, or why do we, have trouble with this? Because we are human, that's why! It is entirely natural for us to have difficulty in finding satisfaction (Ecclesiastes 1:8). However, that does not excuse our dissatisfaction.
You see, we are told not to hunger for anything that God has not granted to us (Exodus 20:17). We are commanded to be satisfied (Hebrews 13:5). We have been given everything necessary so that we can be satisfied (II Peter 1:3). God has promised to satisfy (Jeremiah 31:25) those who are His (Psalm 23:1-6).
But, we must endure the discipline of learning to become satisfied (Philippians 4:11-13). We won't do this naturally or easily. It was over time that the wise man learned the dangers of being a needy person. He expressed this when he said, "...give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me" (Proverbs 30:8). This reveals a trust in the Good Shepherd and His provision and a lack of trust in oneself.
This process that God disciples us by trains us to seek satisfaction solely in Him. God took David through the process necessary to learn this. David said "As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness" (Psalm 17:15). And throughout his psalm of prayer, Moses plead with God that He would teach this essential truth to the Israelites - "So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days." (Psalm 90:12-14).
If you have been struggling to find satisfaction, rest assured that you have been wasting your time looking for it in the wrong places! You have sought to be satisfied by what you can see, taste, hear or feel. These things will not satisfy. They cannot. Entertainment, comfort, ease, productivity, success, acceptance, approval, relationships and the like are all faux satisfactions. The are empty. They are superficial. They are fleeting. And seeking fulfillment in them is in fact, sin!
Run from these things. Run to the One who satisfies. Run to meet with God through the Word of Jesus Christ. Beg Him to fill you and do not cease until you find satisfaction (Genesis 32:26)!
"Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart. Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it. Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain! Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways. Confirm to your servant your promise, that you may be feared. Turn away the reproach that I dread, for your rules are good. Behold, I long for your precepts; in your righteousness give me life!" Psalm 119:33-40
