I'll be honest...I don't fully understand the resurrection. I don't mean Jesus' resurrection so much, I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of that. I mean my own resurrection. The resurrection of the saints. I don't comprehend how it all is going to work. As hard as I try, I can't seem to get my mind wrapped all the way around it. I guess you could say it is a mystery to me.
I Corinthians 15:1-58 gives the most in-depth explanation of resurrection in all of Scripture. Even so, Paul uses the word "mystery" when he describes portions of it. Why? Because, up until Jesus it was entirely a mystery. And, even in our day, we haven't seen it for ourselves so it is a mystery to us. That's why! It was then, and is now, mysterious.
But, if we are in Christ, we will see it for ourselves. It is a promise. Jesus has defeated death. He has pulled out its "stinger". He has rendered death harmless for all who are in Him. For me. For you? See here the final few verses of this glorious chapter -
"50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit, the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.†55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?â€
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
I know that my Savior has swallowed up death for me. And I love Him for it! I hope and pray that you do, too.
