God calls Moses to deliver Israel because of His compassion and the blood of atonement. We are transformed as evidence that He has called us!
First, this is the marvel of the gospel - The Consuming Fire can dwell with us because of Christ.
Exodus 3:2-3, “Then the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire within a bush. As Moses looked, he saw that the bush was on fire but was not consumed. So Moses thought: I must go over and look at this remarkable sight. Why the bush does not burn?”
It is because of Christ and the finished work of the cross that God is with us, and we do not die!
Romans 3:25, “God presented Him as a propitiation through faith in His blood, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His restraint God passed over the sins previously committed.”
He has taken away our sins and paid with His own blood, so God can be just and justify the ungodly. We are saved by faith in His blood.
Don’t let this wonder be lost on you! Holy God dwells with sinful man as a Savior and a Deliverer! The righteous God who punishes the wicked, who will by no means clear the guilty, is the SAME GOD who dwells with sinners and uses saints. He’s the same God presiding over heaven and hell. If we have Christ, then we are safe. If not, the wrath of God abides on us. Flee to safety! Be found in Him.
Secondly, God has compassion on us and pity!
Exodus 3:7-8, “Then the Lord said, ‘I have observed the misery of My people in Egypt, and have heard them crying out because of their oppressors, and I know about their sufferings. I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and to bring them from that land to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the territory of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.”
It is not because we are seeking God, but He seeks us. He comes to save what was lost [Luke 19:10].
He has an elect who He gave to the Son before the foundation of the world. God comes to search these out by the truth of the gospel. He sees us in false religion, playing the hypocrite. He sees us in the bondage of sins. He sees us in pornography, theft, and fornication, and He says, “I have pity on my people. Their oppressors, even Satan himself, oppress them, and I will set them free. They do not have fellowship with Me. They are wasting their life and ruining it. I will give the Spirit and forgiveness. I’ll give them sweet and precious promises, and they’ll be delivered. I'll convict them of their need, and then I’ll set the captive free. I’ll bind the strongman and cast him out. I’ll deliver the slaves of sin.”
Romans 6:21-22,
"But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life."
This good and gracious God, in utter goodness, saves the sinner RIGHT WHERE HE IS - dead in trespasses and hating God like a wounded animal. We are fully grievous according to the Law, but mercy and justice have met together, so Justice now says, “Loose him, and let him go. According to Your compassion, Your Blood was shed. The ransom is paid. Deliver them as You see fit. You must have them. You have paid the price. In due time, collect what You are owed.”
Thus the justice of God and mercy rescue the perishing sinner, and he’s delivered to serve God with praises.
Thirdly, God gives us signs and evidence of our deliverance.
Exodus 3:11-12, "But Moses said to God, Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt? He said, But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain."
If He gives us a wife, then we worship God with her in the unity of the gospel. If He forgives us, then we have joy and peace, holiness and thanksgiving, goodness and love to others. If He saves us, then He gives us power over sins and teaches us the truth of the gospel [Colossians 1:6]. If He rescues us, then we honor Him with our lives. If He imputes righteousness, then He makes our conduct holy. If we are free from sin, then we are slaves of righteousness.
Romans 6:18, "And, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness."
Oh, bless God for transforming grace. He gives us evidence that we are free: First, believe the gospel. Secondly, see God transform your life [1 Thessalonians 2:13]. See the joy, the love, and the compassion. See the change to sincerity and humility. See God praised in difficulty, as He gives you strength. See bad habits disappear. See Him answer your prayer by TRANSFORMING your life.
Oh, the goodness of God to change a sinner to a saint, to keep him humble, and to make us zealous of good works [Titus 2:14]. The evidence will be perseverance and then heaven: We’ll overcome the world [1 John 5:4].
These are the riches of grace that He gives us freely, because He took away our sins. Oh, amazing grace is wonderful: Enter in!
Finally, the bush did not burn because of the blood of Christ. Trust this great God to dwell with you. He's found a way to be holy and deal with us in pity and transforming power!
