“We will rejoice in you and be glad;
We will extol your love more than wine.
Rightly do they love you.”
We have a reason to love the Son of God.
First, His love is better than wine. He's better than everything in this world. The finished work of the cross brings us God, who is the greatest giver! He gives us eternal life, sparing us from hell, entirely because of mercy. He chose us and gave His Son for us, so that He could give us happiness, peace, and holiness forever. He's the giver of the best gift, which is Himself in the new covenant [Heb 8:10]. He gives us pleasures now and forever.
Secondly, Christ's love is better than wine, because it endures storms wonderfully. It's not like the temporary peace the world gives, which is contingent upon circumstances. His peace overcomes all opposition, because it's supernatural by the Spirit. It's in things that can't change forever [2 Cor 4:18]. It's not in sinful things but in the Father's delight, so there's a clean conscience and safety. It can't be removed by difficulty and surpasses understanding, as God Himself comforts. Romans 15:13, “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Phil 4:7, “The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” He makes us more effective by what we endure [2 Cor 1:4]. His love sweetens trials and breaks us with tears of joy and wonder at obtaining mercy. We know that He is sweet, wise, and the rightful Sovereign in our afflictions. Disappointment and heartbreak are yielded to because of His love, which sanctifies us with heartfelt submission. Oh, this love is better than wine.
Thirdly, enjoy this love daily! It's the saint's inheritance to walk with God, always receiving. Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” It's delightful to approach Him in repentance, knowing that His love will provide all. How wonderful to go to Him for cleansing and restoration for His heart-calming love over and over.
Drink abundantly, and be satisfied. Song 5:1, “Be intoxicated with love.” Do not follow Him far off. Come back to His love, and know the sufficiency of Christ's grace. Love will not cast you away. If you've offended Him, then be patient. His love will not forsake you, but He'll sustain you in chastisement and draw near, when proper holiness is produced [Heb 12:10-11].
Live in this love, child of God. There's NO OTHER WAY to be happy in Jesus than His heart-exalting love; it’s better than everything else!
Finally, nothing in this world can satisfy like Christ's love. Seek it above everything else!
