“I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.” vs48-50
Here is the promise of the gospel: If we eat the Lord Jesus, which is receiving Him by faith, then we will not die. God has given us eternal life, and we will never perish. The wrath of God will never touch us, and we’ll live in Paradise. Our earthly body will fade, and the beauty thereof, but those who do God’s will live forever [1 Pet 1:24-25].
This is the promise of the gospel, and this is what He’s offering: It is ANOTHER KINGDOM that’s not of this world [John 18:36]; it is not miracle money or miraculous healings; it is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit; it is contentment in obedience, surrender to God’s will, and living above sin; it is quietness of conscience, and the removal of guilt; it is walking with the Father in forgiveness, acceptance, and hope; it is things within that can’t be seen. 2 Cor 4:17, “For our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory that is far beyond comparison."
Whoever wants these things, let him eat. Christ gives Himself freely. Believe on Him as the reason that you have everything, and you will receive.
Secondly, Jesus doesn’t change the gospel. vs52-53
The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
He doesn’t back down, and He doesn’t barter. He simply preaches the glory of God, full speed ahead, knowing that only the Father can give eternal life. He already said, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him,” and He’ll say it again later, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father [vs44, vs65].” People reject the spiritual food, and they remain blind wilfully! You can explain and explain and explain. Those who have the Father see the light, and those who don’t remain blind.
Let us use Jesus’ method in preaching. We are not removing the mystery, but we are preaching the glory of spiritual life and trusting God to save the elect. He doesn’t use fleshly wisdom, but the word of life. 1 Cor 2:2-7, "For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified… We speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory.”
Jesus said, “Not just My flesh, but My blood too.” If this is a hard saying, then too bad. The gospel doesn’t revolve around human ambitions; it gives NEW AFFECTIONS!
Finally, we will live because of Jesus Christ! vs54-57
As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me.
Jesus is the reason that God blesses us! We have a right relationship with the Father, because of Christ. The promises are ours through Him, and through Him there is repentance.
We come to God with our wrongs, and He heals us, telling us to forgive and to ask forgiveness, when we are wrong [Matt 6:14-15]. He directs us, as we deal with Him through Christ as poor, helpless, and depraved. He is our Righteousness, and He is why we get the Spirit.
Believe that you’ll enjoy spiritual life, because of Jesus alone. Rely on Him, and be comforted! Do not walk in unbelief, but get your peace. Just like a man works a job to get paid, we believe on Christ to receive satisfaction. Know that joy is yours, like David the anointed, and take it. Say,
God has spoken in His holiness:
“I will rejoice;
I will divide Shechem
And measure out the Valley of Succoth.
Gilead is Mine; Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the helmet for My head;
Judah is My lawgiver.
Moab is My washpot;
Over Edom I will cast My shoe;
Over Philistia I will triumph.” --Ps 108:7-9
Speak with boldness and speak with confidence, because all things are yours through Christ, and Christ is God’s. We are not defeated but conquerors. We’re overcomers through Him who loves us!
