So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” vs30-34
They didn’t understand the spirituality of the message. They wanted houses, cars, and an easy life. They didn’t realize that the bread makes us glorify God, so that we live forever, exalting Christ. They had no interest in the remedy for their sins, because they didn’t need a total Savior and Lord. They wanted to go to heaven by doing their own will, rather than the will of Him who sent Christ. In short, they wanted bread but not the bread of life, and after all His talking and demonstrating in power, they were utterly clueless to the kingdom.
It is the same way, now! Many hear the gospel, and hear no gospel in it! They have no pressing need for Christ, so they do not want what He’s giving. He’s talking about eternal life, and they want their best life in this world. He’s talking about living for God, but they want to serve self (and they want God to do it.) “Me, me, me,” is the gospel of self-centered man, while God’s gospel makes us glorify Christ and live for Him to be known.
Do you really want the bread of life? Then He will give it, but do you know what this bread means?
Secondly, the Lord Jesus makes a great promise: He will never cast out anyone who comes to Him! vs35-37
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
Oh, wonder of wonders, and how our hearts ought to fill with joy! We are the most blessed people who come to Christ, because He will not cast us out!
Here we are - filled with sins and utter rebellion - and He will receive the drunkard, the fornicator, and the religionist! He’ll receive the hypocrite, and the person who squandered their First Love. He’ll receive the blasphemer and the backslider. He’ll take the sinner into His bosom and change you [Isa 40:11].
How delightful it is: God will never cast you out, reject you, and bar you from His fellowship. Your divorce won’t hinder you, and neither will your cruelty to others. Let us find any prison or red light district, and tell them all to COME TO CHRIST JESUS.
He will take you and make you new. He is the bread of life, and He will satisfy your soul!
Finally, the Lord Jesus is going to raise us up at the last day! vs38-40
"For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
This great day of judgment is awesome, but we will be spared! Then, it will be known who served God and who didn’t, and all enmity shall cease among the saints. Then, we’ll be in Paradise rejoicing with God, while the wicked are punished!
Our GREATEST FEAR has been removed, and we are safe. Death’s sting can no longer hold us, because our Savior has borne our punishment in His own body on the tree. We are free to meet God in peace and favor. No evil is held against us, and only good works are on our record! There’ll be no weeping saints at the Judgment. All our failures are past, and our struggles are over!
Brother, this is the day worth fighting for, and it's worth holding onto the gospel and stretching it out unto others. It’s worth the fullness of zeal!
