On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. vs1
There’s nothing wrong with going to a wedding and celebrating with the sons of men. The touch not, taste not religion of bread and water is not the gospel [Col 2:16-23]. There is nothing wrong with wine, meat, and feasting in their season; it is not what goes into the mouth that corrupts the man but what comes out. 1 Cor 10:27, “If anyone unbelieving invites you, and you wish to go, eat everything being set before you, inquiring nothing on account of conscience.”
Be careful of this religious world and the rules of men. Things sometimes must be done in private before God, but we are free. Rom 14:22, “Keep your belief about such matters between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves.” Let us be temperate, sober, and enjoy what God has given us, according to our appetites and desires, without judging others.
Secondly, the Lord Jesus is not under the authority of His mother in any way. He was a respectful Son, cared for her, and He yielded as a boy, but as a Man, He did not follow her lead.
When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? vs3-4
This shows us that children are to obey, but adults are to honor. I cannot obey my parents, as if I am a child. When I hit the age of adulthood, then I’m responsible to make adult decisions and follow Christ. I’m not to wait until the inheritance is passed on before confessing Him. Luke 9:62, “Then Jesus declared, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and then looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”John 2:5
This is good advice and good counsel! We are to do whatever the Lord tells us by the Apostles and the Prophets. Don’t think yourself wiser than God, but yield to His understanding, and it will go well with you.
He has the keys of eternal life, and He knows how to make us happy. He knows ways of pleasantness and smoothness, and we’ll save ourselves much trouble, if we obey. Walk by faith in His words and heed His counsel fully. There is no area where He is wrong.
Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.”
Be obedient fully. Don’t be partially obedient, but “Fill the jars with water.” He will do what only He can, which is turn it into wine, but we are to pour in the water of His word for the miracle of gospel joy. We’re to preach the whole counsel of God and be zealous of good works, preaching all of His doctrine relentlessly. We are to believe all of it, obey all of it, and He will bring the joy and peace. Believe the gospel, and you’ll see His glory, but believe fully first.
Thirdly, we always know where the miracle came from, if we serve men and Jesus; it came from Him [vs8-9].
And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew),
We know the word was preached as our duty, and He did what no man can do. We served and obeyed as commanded, and He worked the miraculous, even salvation and joy in others.
Be a servant, and you’ll be first partaker of the great work of God. Don’t leave it undone, but do it. Go to your prayers and preaching. Yield yourself, and God will use you miraculously.
The master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”
Jesus is the best wine! His gospel in the Spirit’s power is a feast of fat things, the best wine, and joy unspeakable and full of glory. Isa 26:5, “On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.” The peace that surpasses understanding is with us. The forgiveness of sins, acceptance with God, and eternal security deliver us from the oppressive works of religion, as the Spirit works in us by faith. These are the sweet things of the gospel, even power over sin, so that we walk with God in communion. No longer impressing a fake god; we commune with Absolute Holiness in the light [John 1:7].
Let this be the focus of our life: the best wine, which Jesus gives us, when we have completely run out of the cheap stuff.
