27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, 28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God.
How we respond to the attack of fear gives voice to what we really believe. If fear has no power in us, it speaks volumes of unmistakable power to those who are trapped in that fear. Whether we stand firm in peace, or crumble under the assault of fear, we testify of what we actually DO believe, regardless of what we say. This is why the battle for control of our minds, and for control of our emotions is so powerful and important. Since fear is the weapon of choice in the world, the response of the church TO that empty threat conveys the truth of EVERYTHING we say. It also conveys that same truth within the consciences of those who are trapped in the world and consumed by fear. Paul instructs here, that when we are not frightened it is a clear sign to them from God of their destruction. Pay attention to the virulence and hatred that is leveled at those who simply will not give in to the culture war and worship at the idols of perversion, rumor, race, and a "right" to commit murder - just to name a few. Pay attention to the manner in which those who demand the "right" to live however they please are the first to deny that same right to any who disagree with them… the hatred that is evidenced shows that something deeper than mere opposition is going on. The problem that they cannot escape is that when we stand for the truth and do not quake and tremble at their threats; their own souls begin to grind away at them, testifying that they are preparing their own destruction, forging the very things that will torture them for all eternity. And all the while, the peace and steady confidence which we are given from God, to face any trial, overcome any difficulty and emerge victorious from every hardship drives them further and further into that same terror with which they sought to kill us. Beloved, stand firm in the truth. Do not be shaken by them, but rather remember that Christ is risen and is triumphant over everything, even death!!
