The sure promise of God is real to those who trust Him. But our hearts are easily led astray by the envy of sinners. We turn from trusting and following God when we look with longing and desire upon those who enjoy the rich but passing pleasures of a life lived for only this world. Envy is only a breath away from covetousness, which Paul tells us in Colossians 3.5 is idolatry. Our envy turns us to the worship of idols. False gods of the flesh that promise that they can give us anything our hearts desire... that they can be the sure reward of this life. Gluttony, drunkenness, greed, violence, sexual sin of every flavor of perversion... none of them can do anything but destroy us. The FOOL cries "eat, drink, be merry... tomorrow we die". They forget that there IS something after death. There looms for all of us, the judgement seat of Jesus Christ!! (2 Corinthians 5.10)
Beloved, heed the counsel of the wise man: There is a future. Be zealous for the fear of the Lord. Seek His will, do His will, love His will!! Instead of living as if there were nothing after death, as if there were no future, no eternal reward, no eternal judgment and no final reckoning - live with the end in view. Keep your eyes and your heart's affection fixed firmly on the God who will surely fulfill every promise He ever made. Your hope in Him will NOT be cut off!!
