Psalm 11:1–4 (NKJV): In the Lord I put my trust; How can you say to my soul,
“Flee as a bird to your mountain”?
2 For look! The wicked bend their bow,
They make ready their arrow on the string,
That they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart.
3 If the foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?
4 The Lord is in His holy temple, The Lord’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.
For all who tremble at the evening news; for all who shudder when the phone dings; for all who wonder "whatever are we going to do?"; for all who wring their hands, toss in their bed without sleep, and cannot imagine life continuing in the current age… take heart. God is still on His throne, He is not afraid, He is not surprised, He is not worried, He is not troubled - for all of His creation is EXACTLY as it is supposed to be and NOTHING is outside of His Sovereign control. Not one rogue atom exists in all of the universe and beyond. Evil men and wicked women rise to power and fall away today as they have always done and God remains; disease and pestilence stalk the earth and God rules; the plans of men go awry, hopes and dreams, intentions and purposes fail and still God works out the inscrutable details of His perfect will and all things proceed as they should into the perfect conclusion of His infinite, omniscient, omnipotent plan. And beloved His plan is ALWAYS better than ours could ever be!! We, who know the Lord, must never be reactionary in our understanding of world events. We should never be the ones who cry and weep saying "fly for the end of all things is near…" we ought never to be the ones who lash out in fear, strike out in rage or seek revenge when we do not like how things turn; for we, of all people, must know beyond all knowing that God is God. If the foundations are destroyed what can the righteous do? But the next verse gives us confidence that the foundations are NEVER destroyed, for God is our foundation and He is in His Holy temple, all is right and no matter how wrong it all seems, it is the surest of comforts to our soul, His throne is in heaven… all of this noise, confusion and chaos is just the outworking of His eternal will - He tests the sons of men, and will not the judge of all the earth do what is right? Oh, my beloved, cease your trembling and cast yourself upon the breast of the Father, let His arms enfold you and know the peace of His love!! Psalm 131 reminds us to calm and quiet our souls like a weaned child with his mother… needing nothing, only loving. Such is our life, such is our hope, such is our peace!!
