INTRODUCTION: The main subject that we see in the Book of I Peter is about “salvation”.
We would see three major thoughts about salvation in our text. I. CHAPTER 1 VS. 3-12- GOD’S PLAN OF SALVATION. A. Vs. 3-9- Salvation primarily should bring glory to God. Cf. II Thess. 2:13-14 1. Vs.3-4- The nature of this salvation as a new birth according to the mercy of God brings praise to God the Father, Who is the source of salvation- Cf. Titus 2:13. 2. V.5- God’s people are described as those who are being kept or “shielded” in the continued activity of God in their lives. The divine protection and the final salvation are only for the believers. 3. Vs. 6-9- refers to our joyful anticipation of the future; the value of faith that survives through trials and persecutions through the test of time, and the faith that is focused on the person of the Lord Jesus Christ who will enable us to finish the work He has called us to do. Cf. II Cor. 5:14-15, II Tim. 4:6-8
II. VS. 13-25 WHAT SALVATION BRINGS IN OUR LIVES. A. Vs.13-16- A life of Hope- a desire to serve and please God. 1. V.13- Shows the readiness of the believer to follow, to serve the Lord, and by the grace of God- be committed up to the end. 2. Vs. 14-16- Every day we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us through the Word of God and we receive strength through prayers. B. Vs. 17-21- A life of reverence before God. 1. Every day we connect ourselves with other people in the world - they hear us talk; they see our actions and the way we dress- Cf. Matt. 5:13-16. 2. There are practical things we need to learn about separation. Cf. II Cor. 6:14-18 C. Vs. 22-25- A life of love. 1. The best thing we show our love towards our fellow believer is to make ourselves a spiritual blessing to them- a.) Praying for them. b.) Guiding them grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord. c.) Encouraging them to attend church services and activities.
III. CHAPTER 2:1-10- OUR SPIRITUAL GROWTH IN SALVATION. In v.2- We must always crave for the pure Word of God for it is only through feeding ourselves with God’s Word that we grow spiritually- Cf. Col. 3:16. 1. The Bible describes itself as our spiritual food- the water, milk, bread and meat for our spiritual lives- it’s everything we need for sustenance. 2. We must personally study the Word of God especially on the major doctrines in the Bible.
CONCLUSION: Remember the Bible will always bless a heart, because it does not only teach us our way of salvation, but as we meditate on it, we feel God’s presence in our lives.
