“I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.” Isaiah 50:6
What paid for our sins, trespasses and offenses against almighty God were the wrath Christ suffered, the death He died, and the blood He shed on Mount Calvary. Yet, the length to which the Lord Jesus would go in order to redeem us should humble us to the dust. His rejection by men (Isa 53:3) displayed the depravity of fallen humanity. His beard was pulled completely from His face. He was spat upon to shame Him. Jesus was beaten so mercilessly that He was reduced to flesh and blood rubble and unrecognizable as a human being (Isa 52:14). Though His physical sufferings did not pay for our sins, through them we have a visible representation of the extent to which our God would go to save us. Jesus asks, “Is my hand shortened, that it cannot redeem? Or have I no power to deliver?” (v2); and “Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God” (v10); for our LORD’s trusted name is the God upon whom we rely: Jesus.
The extent to which Jesus went To save the soul from sin, Shows how deprav’d and how hell-bent Was our cold hearts within.
