I am not a gambling person. But I have taken a few risks in my life. Quite regularly, when I consider the many football games I played in well into my 50s. In any of those games, I could have easily injured myself and ended up with a broken foot. More generally, we may view life as one big risk, full of uncertainty. In countless cases, we make decisions based on incomplete facts, with the result unclear.
At no time do we feel more acutely uncertain than at this time of the pandemic. At the national scale, policymakers and health experts are grappling with what to do next. As I write this, it is uncertain what kind of quarantine restrictions will be imposed in Metro Manila and other parts of the country. On a personal level, scores of people are wondering about their jobs and livelihoods. Careers have been put on hold, wedding plans have been shelved, and health issues have been neglected. Business ventures are on the brink of bankruptcy. The future has never been as murky as now.
What a stark contrast our God is. The Psalmist declares that “his understanding is beyond measure” (Psalm 147:5b). Paul can, therefore, exult, “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!” (Romans 11:33). Theologians say that God is omniscient. That is, He has infinite and perfect knowledge of all things. There is, therefore, no uncertainty in the eternal mind of God.
For the Christian, what a great comfort to know that the all-knowing God is our Father because of the life and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. To paraphrase a famous hymn, we do not know the future, but we know who holds the future. Praise Him!
