In a Multitude of Words...

Proverbs 10:19–21 (NKJV)
19 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking,
But he who restrains his lips is wise.
20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
The heart of the wicked is worth little.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many,
But fools die for lack of wisdom.

It is not hard to find someone to listen to, the difficulty is in determining whether or not you SHOULD… as a rule of thumb, those who talk without ceasing are generally not worth the time it takes to listen. You know the flavor of the words, the talk ventures into places you ought not to linger and then the words pile up one on top of the other as they attempt to refine, (disguise) what they were really saying. This pattern is always before them, the seemingly endless prattle, the constant drone of self-justification. They use words to mask the silence in their heads. Learning to be comfortable with silence is a difficult thing, but it does display wisdom when we can master our own tongues and simply be quiet rather than defending ourselves or our intentions. When first we have mastered being silent, we can then turn our attention to using words that will bring life to the hearers. When we do choose to speak it should be words that are first of all true, then righteous, then uplifting… more could be added but the mark of our words should leave people wanting more, rather than praying that we would just stop… when we know righteousness our words reflect that fact, and when we choose to speak, it should be to bless, to build up, to encourage; sometimes to exhort, rebuke or reprove but then only according to scripture. In the end, the question is this: do you feed men's souls with your words, or do you leave them worse off because they have listened to you?
