Those who escape the sword will return from Egypt to Judah, few in number, and the whole remnant of Judah who went to dwell in the land of Egypt will know whose word will stand, Mine or theirs!
In wrath, God remembers mercy. He could have wiped us out, but to glorify His name, He has mercy on a few, because many are called but few are chosen.
First, everyone heard the call to repentance! No one was excluded.
Vs15-16, Then all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to other gods, and all the women standing by—a great assembly—along with all the people living in the land of Egypt and in Pathros, said to Jeremiah, “As for the word you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not listen to you!
He did not preach in a corner, but Jeremiah spoke to everyone, and the gospel has gone to the ends of the earth [Rom 10:18]. No one would respond differently, if they heard more clearly. No one would have been saved, if left to ourselves.
God saves sinners because He is gracious and kind.
“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love that He had for us,” [Eph 2:5]
It is not because we’ve done something different, for all have sinned and come short of His glory. God was rich to us in His mercy! He reached down and saved us, when we would have perished like others [Titus 3:5].
Secondly, we are saved by repentance!
Vs28, “Those who escape from the sword will return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah”
Those who obtained mercy returned to Jerusalem: they had to leave Egypt. He will not save us on OUR terms:
-
He will take our whole life, not a part of it, but He will be Lord [Rom 10:9].
-
He will give us grace. We will not serve God in our strength but His [Isa 45:24]. We’ll observe the Sabbath rest.
“For the person who has entered His rest [the gospel, new covenant promise] has rested from his own works, just as God did from His.” [Heb 4:10]
-
He will be our righteousness! Just like we trust Him for strength, we trust Him for righteousness also: we walk by faith in the Son of God [2 Cor 5:7].
Are you saved? If so, then you have repented, and you are repenting. You are leaning on Him.
Thirdly, God’s salvation is sweet! The joy, peace, and knowledge that this “few people” have is the GREATEST joy, peace, and wisdom; it is confidence in God and fellowship with your Maker; it is forgiveness and cleansing; it is being in covenant with Christ based upon His faithfulness, and being dealt with graciously in unfailing mercy that gives and gives and gives [Prov 30:15]; it is conscience dependence on Christ, your greatest Friend, and it is a boldness that is fearless.
Many think we are radical, that we’ve gone too far, act too spiritual, and are too self-righteous, but the communion we have with God is too good to give up! We choose Him over the world and count ourselves blessed! We have comfort!
Finally, may the Lord Jesus reveal that YOU are a brand plucked from the fire - that YOU have obtained mercy!
