Meanwhile, Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from within a bush. Moses saw the bush ablaze with fire, but it was not consumed. So Moses thought, “I must go over and see this marvelous sight. Why is the bush not burning up?” vs1-3
Why am I not consumed in God’s presence? I am a sinner. Why has He spared me?
This marvel and mystery is Christ crucified! He is the reason God can be just and justify the ungodly! He is why we have forgiveness: God can be who He is - a consuming fire - and yet not consume us, because Christ died for our sins. Therefore, He can use us and be merciful to us. He can commission us after we’ve fallen. He can use us, even though we are sinners.
When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees. “Go away from me, Lord,” he said, “for I am a sinful man…”
“Do not be afraid,” Jesus said to Simon, “from now on you will catch men.” [Luke 5:8-10]
Never think the gospel is the greatness of man: it is the greatness of God our Savior!
Secondly, God is the God of the covenant [Ex 3:6].
Then He said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”
He made promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and He will keep those promises, even saving the elect, both Jew and Gentile [Eph 3:6]! It is NOT that Nigeria is worthy of His salvation; it is not that the people are crying out in faith, but the elect are chosen by God, and they must be saved.
When revival came to Europe 500 years ago, it was because of God’s election. He remembered His covenant, gathered them in, and then left the majority of these countries in darkness now. Likewise, He came and established America because He wanted to save elect souls - slaves and Natives, colonizers and immigrants. He wanted to get the gospel to the world through America and the English language. Now, He comes to Nigeria, Kenya, China, and South America because His elect do not know Him and suffer in bondage. Therefore, their burden must be lifted. Therefore, they will see His mercy.
Never think revival waits upon man! It does not. God will use man, but He stirs up man when He’s ready to work: He gives us to prayer and fasting; He causes us to keep His commands; He puts the gospel burden on our hearts. He calls us, as He did Moses.
Finally, we do have the Great Commission [Ex 3:10]:
Therefore, go! I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring My people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.”
If you’ve seen how God can be just and justify the ungodly… if you’ve beheld Him in the covenant as faithful… then YOU are called unto the world. He will use you, and He sends you.
Never mind that you’re weak and pitiful: go in His strength. Never mind that you have failed! You didn’t rely on Him, so it came to nothing. In the past, Moses was compassionate, but he didn’t have God’s power, so he ran scared and acted in the flesh [Acts 7:22-29]. Now, he has the Almighty, and he can’t fail, because he knows he’s a failure, and the Almighty will get the credit.
Don’t trust the wisdom of Egypt but the grace of God. Don’t go in your power but His. God will be with you, and that’s what counts: He has called you, He has sent you, and He will do it! He’ll use your preaching and praying. He’ll use your giving and contributing, but salvation is of the Lord.
Let God be glorified in saving sinners. He has an elect, and He uses the redeemed to get them!
