Our Relationship to the Law

Romans 7:6 (NKJV): But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

Delivered, died, serve, newness... we have been delivered from our old relationship to the Law. Note this though, we are not delivered from the Law itself, just from the old relationship of bondage; for Paul finishes the thought at the end of the verse. We have been delivered by our death SO THAT we might serve our God and obey His Law in newness of the Spirit rather than in the old bondage. It is a very crucial distinction that is sadly missed by many who cry "under grace, not the law" as an excuse to satisfy the flesh and its desires. Despite the fact that in the next verses Paul specifically addresses that error, we still fight the same battles and lose the same ground. For as soon as we allow that idea to take root, we end up excusing things that God hates in the name of "Christian Liberty". Beloved, here is the heart of the issue, before Christ, we were under bondage to a law we could not fulfill, expecting it to provide something that it was not intended to provide. The law was never a final path to God, merely a tool to show us our lack, to aim us at the God who IS all we will ever need. And the law did its job! It was a tutor, to bring us to Christ. He fulfilled the legal demands of the law for justice on our behalf, and made a way with His own Blood to bring us to God. But the things that the law reveals about who God is and what He loves or hates, those things remain UNCHANGED. So what then is our current relationship to the law? We now serve God, and love to obey that law which we used to hate. It is in the newness of THIS spirit, the now living heart of the born-again that we can actually DO what the law explained. To love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength - and, to love our neighbor as ourselves. When WE cease to be the center of our everything, then we are moving in the right direction. Rather than asking "What may I do?" or "What is prohibited"; seek to know your God. Let His presence be your delight, and you will no longer have to ask what you are supposed to do or not do!!
