Motivation matters... here we see two different perspectives on money. The first man works hard and tills the ground he has. He is blessed and has plenty of bread; set against that truth is the one who would rather play than work, frivolous is his nature and the reward of that frivolity is poverty, and of THAT the frivolous man will have plenty!! This is completely contrary to the welfare mentality of our culture where we reward those who do not want to work at the expense of those who do... but the balance to this is the truth of the second couplet. Here we see the simple truth that God will reward the faithful man. The one who is a good steward of all that he has and who views it all as being held in trust on behalf of God... but the man who spends himself in the pursuit of money, the man who forsakes all else, who loves the gaining of wealth above everything... this man WILL BE punished. He might even be punished with the granting of that all consuming desire... and that would be a punishment indeed, for the effect of THAT would be to cauterize his heart and cut him off from the voice of God. God wants us to be faithful, not lazy and frivolous; He desires to bless us, but will not bless the one who loves nothing but the bank balance. Beloved, understand that the motive of the heart is the heart of the matter in the sight of God... and how you view money speaks volumes about what your heart loves!
