Hasty Speech

Proverbs 29:11, 20 (NKJV): A fool vents all his feelings,

But a wise man holds them back...

Do you see a man hasty in his words?

There is more hope for a fool than for him.

This is such a common problem, and our cultural obsession with social media only increases its prevalence. But the roots of the issue are much deeper. The origin of this behavior is found in our essential sin nature. We are basically impressed with ourselves, convinced that our ideas, opinions, thoughts and rants are not only true, but that they are in demand. We seem to truly believe that no one has ever been as wise as we, as well informed, as needed... not that we would ever say such things out loud, but the endless stream of all the things we DO say out loud communicates the point quite eloquently. We think a thing, and instantly it is out of our mouths, posted and tweeted around the globe... but God tells us that it is better to consider our words, to not be hasty, to speak only that which is according to His will.

Proverbs 17:27–28 (NKJV): He who has knowledge spares his words,

And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.

Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace;

When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.

Beloved, as children of the King, it is better for us to restrain our lips than to allow them to run unchecked. It is no accident that self-control is at the pinnacle of the fruits of the Spirit, it is not natural to us. But give thanks to our Father who gives all that we need, His abundance is always overflowing to bless us.
