What do some churches have in common with a hotel breakfast? Technically both meet their respective definitions as a breakfast or a church. Yet both lack nutritious and fail to satisfy. Let’s look at that free hotel breakfast first. It usually has donuts, muffins, and bagels but they are always small and stale. What about that juice machine, how does that thing even work? Maybe you stayed at the Holiday Inn last night? They offer biscuits, scrambled eggs, sausage, gravy, and some kind of microwave potatoes, but none of it is all that great. I have yet to see anybody ever eat one of those hard boiled eggs in the fridge, have you? I usually opt for the waffles because that iron is so hot that it’s bound to kill anything that could be living in that batter.

I know that motels can’t spend much on breakfast. I also realize how hard it is to feed random people who drop in from 6:00 to 9:30 am. Chef Ramsey himself couldn’t keep everything hot and fresh on a motel’s budget. The motel knows that we don’t rent rooms just for the free breakfast. We pick our motels based on where we want to sleep, not on what we want to eat. The church, on the other hand, is a very different story.

Today's churches are majoring on the free breakfast and overlooking their responsibility to provide a safe and secure place for weary travelers. They offer you a praise band, a youth group, a comedian, and lots of fun activities. The problem is that Christian bands are never as good as the world’s bands. The youth group never replaces the school group. No humorous pastor will ever get the laughs and applause of a real comedian. Now with your kids going to little league, band, and the scouts while you are working over time and volunteering at the school, do you need some extra church event to attend?

NO! You don’t pick a hotel based on the breakfast menu. And you shouldn’t pick a church based on any of the above either. The church’s role consist of perfecting the saints for the work of the ministry. This “perfecting” is only achieved through Biblical teaching, corporate prayer, congregational singing, and fellowship. As Christians, we need to be built on the Word of God so that we are not tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine.

Instead many churches are offering a prepackaged heat and serve version of worship. They usher your children into a cliquish group of teenagers led by a spiritual college kid. Meanwhile you are entertained by a hip and trendy story and joke teller. If that ain’t enough, they have some stale church programs to help you feel committed. Why not book your family into a clean safe place to stay while on life’s journey? Check into a church that centers on the Bible.
