5th Commandment. LD39/ Ephesians 5 & Romans 13 We stand at the beginning of the 2nd table of the Law. This can ONLY be kept in the love of Christ and OUT of the 1st table of the Law. Authority and obedience is at a crisis today among teachers, masters, authority figures and many times this commandment is used to point out parental respect. But this commandment speaks to ALL authority as we too must submit as long as it does NOT strive with the Word of God.
This commandment speaks of authority and obedience. Authority is the power to command. It is NOT the "might makes right" concept. Authority is ALWAYS God given and always derivative from above. Authority must ALWAYS look to God and function to God in order to do it correctly. There are 3 things regarding authority:
1. It is the power to command or legislate.
2. To demand obedience
3. The ability to punish.
God's authority is the ONLY innate or inherent authority. ALL other authority is derived FROM God, and we must append to our our/all authority as God pleases and to His glory! No one has absolute authority, and ALL must answer to God!
There is a demand also. All must answer to God with their authority and God demands honor, love, and faithfulness to all those PUT in authority over us! We honor those put in position by God over us. AND, we must also be careful on how we speak of those in office both in the world and our homes. This is for the Lord's sake as we see God behind EVERY authority! We have the calling to love them. Do we not in God's love honor them without faithfulness?! You cannot have one without the other virtues. We adhere to these principals as we show the glory of God in our lives, being subjected to all authority for Christ's sake. Rebellion, strife, anarchy is not how the child of God behaves. We can find fault with parents, elders, and such, but we obey as it is GOD'S AUTHORITY and if we are under let us obey as God commands.
We do this with promise (as God showed to Israel when they obeyed in the old testament.) As citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven the promise is when we obey authority (and all the commandments) all things will go well with us and we will reap the benefits of the heavenly. And so our prayers go up as we are in positions of and submission under authority as we obey our Father in heaven as He is the ultimate authority and also has He has placed IN authority!
