"The Lord's Supper" LD 28&29, John 6 We need to know the distinction between the sacraments. Baptism is a sign of incorporation into Christ and the Holy Spirit engraphting us into the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord's Supper however is a sacrament that is repeated to continually remind and hold us accountable in a God fearing walk with God. It is coupled with faith to give us assurance that we are washed in His blood and are clean, leading us to a new and sanctified and holy walk and life!
Historically, the Thursday of the week of the Passion. The Lord takes it out of the typical and into the new dispensation as He IS the fulfillment (from Passover feast to His crucifixion.) It was to be remembered forever by the families in the Old Testament and they had to tell their children and show them the freedom from bondage and slavery into freedom. It has Christ written all over it! The elements of the Passover (bread and wine.) And the Lord took these lesser elements of the Passover (not the sacrifice) to institute the Lord's Supper, giving the church in the new dispensation the calling to go forward in a new and Holy life, knowing full well that Christ fulfilled complete sanctification for us in the one, perfect sacrifice on the cross. We then embrace the saving faith being new and governed in a new and holy life. When we move from the type and shadow of the old to the fulfillment once and for all...the sacrifice of Christ. The atonement that is yours and is mine!
We partake SPIRITUALLY by faith! Faith is encouraged and we are spurred on to that new and holy life. It is exercised in faith (not the elements themselves as you see in the accursed idolatry. Confession of faith, article 35 of the Belgic confession.) We receive BY FAITH the body and blood of Christ to support our SPIRITUAL souls! There are two things we take hold of in partaking of the supper:
1. We embrace Christ and therefore receive pardon for sin and the gift of eternal life.
2. We become more and more united, living and being governed by that one Spirit. The joy in a sanctified life.
We do this TOGETHER as the table of the Lord. We are the body of Christ and in common we see we are justified in the blood of the Lamb together. We sit at the table ready to forgive others as we have all been forgiven. We experience communion of the saints at the communion table.
Apart from the elements we have nothing and have no forgiveness, but we are confirmed repeatedly that we have been forgiven with that one, perfect sacrifice on the cross.
Elements that speak to faith. YOUR faith and MINE!!!
