Peter begins this epistle "wherefore" of "therefore" or "so then..." Peter talks about the end of the world that IS coming though men think they it will continue as it has in their ignorance. Ignorance that there was a flood by God's power. Peter says "don't be ignorant like the world because the Lord IS going to come and even describes it for us! A NEW heavens and NEW earth. The hope of the church when Christ comes again. So what kind of lives should we live seeing this is true? Peter could say these words back then....how much more applicable are they in our day and age?! Peter says we ought to be diligent in a sanctified and holy life so we are found as such when Christ comes again.
Sometimes the picture is dim as we do not always live ready for Christ to come or for Christ to come and take us to Glory. Unlike the saints in glory already who long for it we are still in the world and must live our day to day existence although principally we are in heaven with them. We are blest with a foretaste of it today, here in church, but it is so easy to forget as we find ourselves in the world that take us away from our perspective the day right after. Sad to say this is even true in some of the church world even today. God's purpose is that we live IN the world but not OF the world. Traveling as Abraham as a pilgrim and stranger who lived in a tent. A picture that SHOULD be reflected in your life and in my life! A piece of property on Stein road with a house but NOT my HOME! God comes and we do not have any guarantees of a long life and what will He find when He does? Bigger barns while the man's soul was required that very night because he was NOT rich in Christ?! So many projects here below...things we want to do, things we want to accomplish that we often pine for Christ to wait?
Our calling is to be diligent. As a student who applies himself to the task to reach the end goal. Diligent children of God to be found spotless as we apply everything (in our lives) to the goal. Easily detracted by affluence and riches that sparkle in this day and age, but really have NO inherent value whatsoever. We request and pray "Thy Kingdom come!" To more and more submit ourselves to Him till the perfection of the Kingdom comes. Diligence here in the Church, in our family lives, and beyond to seek the Kingdom more and more. God knows us inside and out. Will He find us diligent when He comes again? Does He see that in our every day lives right now? TO have a spot is to be tarnished. To be spotless is to be pure and untarnished. To have the thesis as the student of Heaven in our lives! Patterned to NOT have a spot! Blameless!
The result will give us great peace in our lives. Do you fear the Lord's coming? Are you afraid of what the Lord will find when He comes? That is NOT peace. And we must live a life and a lifestyle that gives us peace. Peace with God as we walk according to the forgiving grace of God.
And then a GREAT noise will be heard when He comes again. The world will want to crawl and hide under a rock and we will have PEACE! Come Lord Jesus!
