Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD." -Jeremiah 9:23-24
GOD WANTS TO BE KNOWN!
Have you ever prayed a prayer that goes something like this:
"Father, there are many times that I don't understand You — who You are, what Your character is and why You would love a sinner like me."
My prayers often go in this direction. I desperately want to know God fully.
Dr. Wayne Grudem says in his massive book "Systematic Theology" that while God can’t be FULLY known, He can and wants to be known extensively. That's good news church! God the Creator, the Author and Perfector of our lives and of our faith, wants us to know Him! When I think of the day that I will know my God face to face, I am overwhelmed with warmth and peace. Do you want to know God and who He is?
This theme of drawing near to God and knowing Him fully lit the timber and caused a flame in the heart of the worship team here at Logos. Our upcoming worship night, “God You Are,” is an outpouring of this need to know Him.
Scripture gives us many glimpses of who God is, with the Old Testament declaring His greatness and sovereignty while the New Testament shares with us His kindness and humility. These are just a few of the numerous descriptions of God's attributes.
In John 4:26, Jesus tells the woman at the well, "I who speak to you am He." Now, doesn't that sound an awful lot like what God tells Moses from the burning bush? YES! Exodus 3:14 "God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Say this to the people of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'"
We long to know the Great I AM. He is love and patience, peace and mercy. He is sovereign. He is judge. He is light. He is grace. God is all this and much more!
We are so excited to have the opportunity to dive in and marinate on God’s attributes with you. “God You Are” has been designed with a trifold purpose:
1) Understand better who God is.
2) Understand who we are in light of who God is.
3) Respond to who God is and who we are with proper worship.
In the upcoming weeks, let me encourage you to begin asking the Lord to reveal Himself to you. My prayer is that we be a singing church who knows God in a better and more intimate way. I want us to hear His voice and KNOW that it is Him!
Please join me in this prayer, as we look forward to Worship Night on June 5:
"Father, I know You are good, You are light, and You are eternal. I trust Your decree. Jesus You are King, You are gracious and giving. Holy Spirit You are our counsel in times of darkness. Help our unbelief! God You are our Savior!"
