SA Founder's Father, Ted Lee, Dies at 76

A simple note of tribute from the founder of SermonAudio, Steven Lee, upon the death of his father. A much fuller tribute can be watched around the 26-minute mark of the funeral. I encourage you to watch the recorded funeral.

My dad passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2018.

His name was Tae-Yung "Ted" Lee and he was 76 years old. He was a husband, father, grandfather, businessman, entrepreneur, and a deeply devoted Christian.

When I received the text message from my mother saying that my dad had collapsed, I was with a friend reading and praying at our local church nearby. The ambulance had taken him to the hospital and tried to revive him for 40 minutes but to no avail. We knew he was gone. My dad had been struggling with chest pains for a number of years really so it was not a surprise that this day had arrived, but even so, it was very sudden and very unexpected in other ways. One moment he was with us, the next moment he was in Heaven with the Lord.

(My dad would often be carrying around one of many such notebooks, every page filled with a stream of thoughts and ideas both in English and Korean covering a wide-ranging array of interests—everything from Bible meditations to architectural designs, emerging technologies, sustainable living, politics, and education.)

The passage that my friend and I were reading that very morning was from Jeremiah 13. I remember being struck by how careful Jeremiah treated the “word of the Lord.” The Lord said do this, so he did that. The word of the Lord came again and said arise and go, so he went and did just as the Lord commanded. Then the word of the Lord came again, and so on and so forth. At every turn, Jeremiah immediately and unequivocally obeyed God's word. The sin that the Lord identified in that passage can be found in verse 10 .. it was a “refusal to hear my words.” That was so instructive. The fact that my father died the very moment I was reading and meditating on that passage will forever put a “bookmark” in my mind around that chapter and the importance of reading and obeying God's Word.

As I thought about it in the days following, that is the one thing that my father instilled in his children perhaps more than anything else in his life. For all of his faults, he was a man that loved God's Word. That much was clear. He was constantly reading it, talking about it, making notes in it, and improving the translation of it into the Korean language. To me, in this regard, he exemplified the blessed man in Psalm 1 who's delight was in the law of the Lord, “and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”

I thank God for my dad. I thank God for this chief delight that, in some small way, he passed on to me. I pray I will not so quickly forget.

I miss him already.

The funeral service was held on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 2pm EST at Faith FPC in Greenville, SC and was attended by many of his friends and family.

Continuing to pray for you and your family. It is hard to loose someone so sudden so close. The Lord is near: He comforts as He knows.

Your dad has been a blessing to many people! You and your family are continuing that blessing. Thank you for loving the Lord! May He bring His comfort!

So very sorry for your loss.

"Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God." ~ 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Brother Steve,

God blessed you with a wonderful father and He will continue to bless you through all the wonderful memories you carry in your heart for your dad.

May the Lord strengthen and comfort you and your family.

Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son

And now let the weak say, "I am strong"
Let the poor say, "I am rich
Because of what the Lord has done for us"

Jesus loves me! this I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to him belong;
They are weak, but he is strong

Yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me,
The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! he who died
Heaven's gate to open wide!
He will wash away my sin,
Let his little child come in.

Jesus loves me! loves me still,
Tho' I'm very weak and ill;
From his shining throne on high,
Comes to watch me where I lie.

Jesus loves me! he will stay
Close beside me all the way;
If I love him when I die
He will take me home on high.

John 15:9 KJV
(9)  As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

John 13:34 KJV
(34)  A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

John 15:12 KJV
(12)  This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

It is a truly wonderful thing to be able to say, "Yes, Jesus loves me!" It is an everlasting love, born in eternity, discovered in time, lasts for ever.

What hope & promises our Lord & Savior gives to us. May the Lord bring comfort & peace to the Lee family, in what a faithful Friend we have in No King but Christ Alone amen!

Thomas Watson said, “Eternity to the godly is a day that has no sunset; eternity to the wicked is a night that has no sunrise.” Eternity is the grand climax of all history. It is the age to come when every person will acknowledge Jesus as Lord. Eternity will bring to this world all God intended for us. Sin will have been judged & banished. Rewards will have been presented. Life will continue with new vitality, meaning, & perfection. What an age that will be!

Brother Lee,
The testimony of your father, the works of God's providence and His wisdom in formating and directing his ways, faith, service, convictions, purpose, strengths, and abilities while on earth as related in the tributes of the funeral service at Greenville, rejoice the heart of the child of God in thanksgiving.
May this same joy comfort and sustain you through these days of sorrow.

"... ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again,
even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him."

"... also thank we God without ceasing, because,
when ye received the word of God which ye heard
... ye received it not as the word of men,
but as it is in truth, the word of God,
which effectually works also in you that believe"

"The memory of the just is blessed"

It is never easy to say good-bye for now, especially to the dearest ones in our lives. We weep with you and joy with you, Brother Lee. We look forward to the full blessing and reality of this verse: "Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." Our deepest sympathies all the way from around the world, in South East Asia, Philippines.

Brother Steven, may our God give you His peace during this time. Your father is now with the myriads of Christians who have gone before him, and will worship our Triune God with them.

I'm sorry to read about your father's passing, and just as sorry that it was sudden. Such a relief to know that he had been re-born from above, and that your grief is limited to his physical passing only...

In the King James Bible, the word “better” is used 114 times, but the phrase “far better” appears only once: “For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better “ (Philippians 1:23). Thank God your father has reached that far better place, Brother Steven.

We are so sorry, Steven, that you have experienced this very difficult loss. What a joy to have a Godly father, and in this season of gift giving and receiving, these kinds of blessings should not be overlooked.

It has helped me in the loss of my inlaws and mother to consider that of all the Lord's attributes, His patience is one that is not infinite. At some point, His longsuffering for being separated from individual people He has loved since before the beginning of time comes to an end. And He then brings those believers home at that exact right time.

May the Lord Himself make Himself felt close to you, Steven, and comfort your and your family's hearts.
