Growing up in the early-mid 1960s, my sister and I preferred playing with trains, toy robots and bringing home bugs for pets over dolls or tea parties with our teddy bears. We cut down a full size tree (at 6!), built a tree fort in a neighbor's yard since ours was gone and other 'non-girly' activities

We were referred to as tomboys and people knew we'd outgrow that phase once we reached puberty. We did just that and then we each went on to getting married and raising our own families which includes coercion-free 'girly' daughters and masculine sons.

I love being the woman God created me to be and I am still feminine whether I'm wearing frilly dresses, changing the oil in my truck or winning blue ribbons at the state fair for crocheted doilies. (And no, I never have grease under my fingernails because using hand cream before crawling under the hood prevents that.)

I can't begin to imagine the confused mess we'd be today if our family had even considered trying to convince us that we were males born with the wrong body!
