i couldn't read it all because of the subscription requirement. Nevertheless, so what about the appearance of the paper or its name? The state ought not regulate theology.

separation of church and state, Jim? May heaven forbid that a private entity does the accreditation, like a scholastic version of Underwriters Laboratories. But if that happened the state would be a less appealing idol to the statists out there. Statism is idolatry.

“Now since our systems of government has no religious litmus test, then surely you aren’t saying someone should be tried for breaking Moses’ law when they don’t believe in that law or have not been obligated by God to that law in a societal sense.”

Correct – our government has no litmus test. We should live like the Jews in Babylon or Persia. We should acknowledge the governing authority and not try to circumvent the government God has established. However, our government might not have a litmus test, but nevertheless, the official religion of our nation is Humanism.

“And, what if they lived in Iran, China, Russia et al? I do believe God established governments to render laws and justice, but those would by necessity be a far cry from acting as a religious court.”

All men are religious. Some men are Humanists, some are Muslims, some are Hindus, some are Romanists, some are Mormons, and so on. We all live under religious laws and we all go to religious courts.

jessica, my comments are Limited to the civil magistrate. My comments should not be carried over to the church. The church is an entity for mercy and grace. The civil Magistrate is an entity for justice. I'm not mixing the two. They have different duties before God.

frank I'll come back to your comment because I'm limited to my phone right now, but as a brief mention, outside of our consciences and Gods Word for clarity, how can the Romans 13 civil minister know what evil and good are? Today without reference to the Word of God our civil ministers reward evil and punish good. Their consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. The law isn't only about being a tutor onto salvation but it is also a guide for righteousness. How else can the civil minister know how to be protect the orphan and the widow?

i find these topics very frustrating because people argue against the use of Mosaic penalties by civil ministers based on the end of the Old Covenant but i know certainly we've used the old law as a guide in creating western jurisprudence (e.g. Fences around pools and anti beastiality laws). Can anyone find any portion of scripture forbidding the use of the civil code as a guide? I'm not talking about works righteous only the punishment of evil workers. Heck, does Romans 13 even make sense without the law as a reference?

Frank, combining the existence of the death penalty after the flood but before the giving of the law to Moses with Romans 1, i think the other side has no sure footing from the Scriptures.

and to which dispensation does Romans 1 belong to Jim? Furthermore, even if you can argue that the civil laws of Moses are not binding under the new covenant, can you argue that they are forbidden as a model? Shall we stop fencing our pools? You do realize no one here believes in salvation through the law, right?

2 Why do the nations rage[a]
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
4 He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
and terrify them in his fury, saying,
6 “As for me, I have set my King
on Zion, my holy hill.”

sure Jim, not endoring a violation of the eight commandment is indistinguishable from hating poor people. It's not possible to love poor people by encouraging a charitable heart instead of using threats of violence against noncompliant people and stealing by mob rule.

"But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.""

Statism is idolatry, and as sure a way to hell as sacramentalism.

science is progressive by nature (at least it should be). What's thought safe one year is proven wrong another.

i just meant that it wasn't statistically significant. Abortion, for example, is significant because it is disproportionate to the black and hispanic population.

I agree with JL. Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.” Aninias was guilty of lying not of failing to meet a quota. But Jim, remember to not muzzle your ox who labors for your local church. And remember the Widows Offering. We live in a more generous period of time than old Covenant Israel. Hopefully your giving reflects that measure of grace you have received and the Spirit makes upu a cheerful giver.

It won't happen. The tax code is back door law. It's an easy way to control society and hand out goodies to generous donors
