To prepare us for Easter, we have two special services at Zion this week.
The first is on Thursday or Maundy Thursday. Maundy means "mandate" and it is on this day that we remember Jesus' mandate that we are to be servants of all mankind and "to do this in remembrance of Me." Pastor will not only complete his sermon series titled, "Promises, Promises", he will also share a very special "marriage" communion with us.
Then on Friday, we hold our annual "tenebrae" service. Tenebrae means "darkness". It is during this service that we will follow Jesus to the cross. As we get closer and closer to His death, the church will be darkened until it is finally in total darkness. The last light in the sanctuary will come from the Christ candle, which was first lit on Christmas day. This candle will be removed from the church signifying Christ's burial. After a time of silent meditation it will be brought back into the church as a testimony that even the grave could not hold our Savior. We will leave the church in absolute silence in anticipation of the great message to be proclaimed on Easter, "He is Risen."
