Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
God’s love does not mean anything to a sinner until the love of God is shed abroad in the heart by the Holy Spirit. It is not until we have God’s love in us that His love will matter to us. For example, a person’s love to us or forgiveness for an offence does not have any real meaning unless we have a genuine love for that person. But if we love that person then what that person thinks of us means everything. God’s love and forgiveness will mean nothing to us until the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Therefore if the love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit in regeneration, then God’s love, forgiveness, and reconciliation to Him means everything to us. - John Chapman
