The book of Hebrews is an amazing book and easily could take at least four months to study in a slow and fulfilling manner. In Hebrews 7, the author talks (among other things) about the Law and what Its purpose was and is now that Jesus has come.
The author talks about the fact that the Law made nothing perfect but it does perfectly condemns us. God, in His mercy communicated the perfection of Himself in His Law. Man was suppose to use it to line himself up and see that he failed at being perfect.
The Pharisees and their like took the Law and imposed stricter rules and held others to those lesser rules. But still, no perfect could be found in following these man-made designs. But it gave them the ability to point out others flaws in their failure to keep them.
What was the purpose of the Law or the sacrifices? Think about being a priest and every year it was your responsibility to go into the Holy Place and continue to kill and sacrifice animals. Sprinkle the blood and make intercession. Then doing that all over again every year you're alive. Every year that your ancestors before you were alive. Killing and sacrificing. The stains of blood on the alter. Hearing confession of the perfect Law convicting imperfect man.
You'd have to see that this was only a temporary measure and there had to be a better way. And around AD 30, the perfect God/Man steps into history and declares and proves that He is not only the everlasting high priest but He is the perfect Sacrifice! And He is always able to make intercession to those who believe out of His own sacrifice!
The Law points to the need for Christ. The Law convicts and shows us that we need perfection. What is imperfect cannot arise perfection in himself. Only He who is perfect can bestow perfection on the imperfect. Hebrews 7:19 - "for the Law made nothing perfect, and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope through which we draw near to God." The Law points us to Christ - let us run to our only hope and hold tightly and praise His everlasting name.
