Matthew 21:42 – “Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures . . . ?”
Jesus was here rebuking the chief priests and Pharisees regarding their spiritual ignorance. All spiritual ignorance is really scripture ignorance. How much we need the Spirit of truth to open our understandings to the scriptures and reveal the things of Christ unto us! Of course these had read in the scriptures the truth which Jesus was referring to, but they had not perceived its true meaning. They had missed Jesus Christ as the one rejected of men, but chosen of God and precious, the only foundation, the rock of offence and the headstone of the corner. How very many have read over the scriptures but have missed Christ! “Thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” To miss Jesus is to miss all. Many who have read through the Bible and yet never repented of their sins and trusted in Jesus for salvation and eternal life shall have it said to them at the Great White Throne judgment, “Did ye never read in the scriptures . . . ?”
Jesus calls your attention to the scriptures. Jesus made much of the scriptures. Some never have read the scriptures. Some have never read them in order to find Jesus. Some have never read them to the degree that they should. One day we shall all account for whether we ever read “in the scriptures” the things concerning Jesus Christ, whether for salvation or service, and both believed and obeyed them. Some are not serving God “after the due order,” and it shall be said to them at the judgment seat of Christ, “Did ye never read in the scriptures . . . ?” Let us take heed how we build upon this stone, that it be according to the teachings of scripture. Pray that God would give you and others whom you know ears to hear what the Spirit saith “in the scriptures.”
