Psalm 119:71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.
What kind of man or woman would believe and rejoice in trouble and affliction? Only a child of God, that’s who. An elect child of God has been taught of God some divine things that cause them to say, “It is good for me that I have been afflicted.”
They have been taught of God that all things come from Him! Prosperity and comfort is sent by God. Poverty and sickness is sent by God. All things are sent by the Righteous and Holy God of heaven and earth.
Those who love the Lord, who are “the called,” according to His purpose, have been made to see that “all things work together for their good.” Not some things, not a few things, not many things, but all things! (Rom. 8:28)
And O how I pray that God might truly reveal to me what He did to David. If all things work together for my good, then I must conclude that it is good for me that I have been afflicted. Why? THAT I MIGHT LEARN THY STATUES. A child of God is going to be made to see, in one way or another, that it is God who rules, reigns and has His way. (Ps. 115:3, Ps. 135:6, Isa. 14:24, Isa. 14:27, Dan. 4:35, Eph. 1:11) When sinners learn that it is God Almighty who is in control of all things, and all things are for their good, they will say, “It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I MIGHT LEARN the truth about God’s ways.”
There was a day when God sent trouble and affliction to my heart and soul and I, by His grace, saw that I was lost. I saw that not only was I lost, but I was condemned and rightly deserved the wrath of God in eternal damnation. O how I was afflicted in heart and soul. But God in His mercy did not leave me there. He sent me a preacher who told me my only hope of redemption was to look to Christ. AND I LEARNED OF HIM. Dear reader, I am still learning. And though I often act as if I have learned nothing, I have learned, by His grace, that it is good for me when I am afflicted. For in my affliction, I learn more and lean harder on Christ who loved me and gave Himself for me! The next time God sends you a hard trial and distressing trouble, may God enable you to rejoice in your affliction and learn more of Him. - David Eddmenson
