In the opening chapters of his letter to the church in Rome, the apostle Paul is showing how every person, regardless of their moral conduct or spiritual knowledge, is hopeless in trying to present themselves as righteous before God. In Romans 2:17-24, Paul specifically addresses the Jewish people, who put their confidence in their lineage from Abraham, and helps them to see that their religious ancestry and knowledge of the Law is of no value if they violate that same law in their practice, in either attitude or action. In fact, hypocrisy leads the unbelieving world to dishonor God. While we may be tempted to exclude ourselves from the same problem, in reality many people wrongly trust in their baptism, Bible knowledge or Christian activities rather than faith in Christ alone, and Paul's goal is to urge all people to give up reliance on anything or anyone other than our Lord Jesus.
