Jesus said to the woman at the well, you worship what you do not know, we worship what we know for salvation is from the Jews. This points out that there is right worship and wrong worship. The consequences of wrong worship in not knowing the one true and living God. God is known through worship. This is why God sets forth the elements of right worship.
We cannot worship any other God - For the Lord God will not share His glory with another. We must not worship the one true God through idols or any natural means for that would be to effectively worship a different God.
Indeed, man creating his own elements and mode of worship effectively creates an idol to worship - no matter what we call it. This is why worship according to God's prescription is so important we want to worship and to know the one true and living God.
The first and most important issue of worship is that God's people must worship through Jesus Christ, the one mediator between God and man. Man is sinful, corrupt, and evil. He is, therefore, excluded from God's presence. However, Jesus made a way back to God by His atoning death on the cross.
Second, the first four commandments set forth the essence of the Regulative Principle of Worship. commandment 1 - Worship the one true Lord God only commandment 2 - Worship God only as He directs commandment 3 - Ministers must not violate the people consciences by worshiping in any way not prescribed by God Himself. commandment 4 - Worship on the Lord's Day
