Ananias is one of the easily overlooked disciples whose contribution to the lives of others bears pondering. When we meet him in Acts 9, we find an instructed man, given specific direction by the risen Lord by way of a vision. We see him as a troubled man, hesitant because of the man to whom the Lord is sending him. We find a reassured man, who speaks of Saul's identity, duty, and adversity, showing Ananias that it is Christ who will preserve the honour of his name and his people. We find a genuinely obedient man, who does exactly as his Lord directs. And so we find in Saul of Tarsus a favoured man, whose life has been entirely reversed, and who receives rich blessings from the Lord in the first days of his discipleship. Saul and Ananias, brought into fellowship with each other through mutual faith in Christ, together with unnamed disciples in Damascus, all show us something of the unity of the faith and the sweetness of the kingdom of God.
