Matthew's account of the Jesus flight to Egypt has been the target of critical scholars. Matthew's quotation of Hosea 11:1 has been said was a misapplied prophecy fortelling Jesus' return from Egypt when it was obviously referring to the nation of Israel. However, Hosea did not merely include the nation of Israel. He refers to God calling out for His children to return. But in order for this future restoration to take place, Christ must come and represent the nation of Israel that has failed to live up to God's righteous and holy demands. Therefore, Matthew is right in calling Jesus that son whom God has called out of Egypt. For Christ is that new Moses who would deliver God's people from the oppressive hand of sin and death forever!
