Jesus' ministry disclosed progressively more of who he is and what he does. The friends who brought the paralytic had faith in Jesus. Faith operates in need, but with confidence. It was faith in him as well as faith in his ability. That should mark our faith. Jesus made a connection between illness and sin. There is sometimes a direct link but that is the exception to the rule. In the Book of Job God warns against trying to establish a direct connection. However, trouble is the result of the Fall, Jesus was pointing to the root cause of all human ill, and he was addressing the man's conscience. This was followed by another word of authority - healing him. The scribes were right when they identified God as the only one who can forgive sin. But Jesus asserted his right to do so. He was pointing to his person - God and man in one person, and to his position - The Christ acting with God's full authority. No one can see if sins are forgiven; but healing can be proved or disproved. When Jesus healed the man he was showing that God was with him, and so his claim to forgive sin was valid. This account gives us many reasons to put our trust in him and follow the examples of those four friends.
