The last five commands of 1 Thess 5:12-22 concern discernemnt. It seems that some in the Thessalonica church were skeptical of either the preaching or prophetic utterances in the assembly. Rather than belittling and ignoring such prophetic declarations, Paul says they should examine them carefully to discover whether they are genuine. The Scripture provides ample criteria for such testing.
