The Importance of the Resurrection Paul said to the Corinthians, “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.” (1Cor. 15:7) It is one of the truths we believe in in order to be saved — “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Rom. 10:9) You must “believe in your heart” — not merely verbalize it or mentally assent to it. You know and are convinced and believe God raised him from the dead. Christ’s resurrection means that God has been satisfied — satisfied God’s just requirements — the wages of sin is death and Jesus paid it. If he were not raised, then Jesus’ death would have looked like the death of any other sinner. But His resurrection means God is satisfied; our sins have been justly dealt with.
We learn three important truths about our Lord. 1. Notice how our Lord mercifully and tenderly receives His weak fickle disciples (vv. 17, 21, 26). 2. Notice how our Lord graciously accommodates His disciples (vv. 24-29). 3. Notice how bountiful our Lord is to His disciples (vv. 22. 23).
