Sometimes we feel we are being told only half the truth. When we read about Israel's demand for a king we feel there is more to the story than they are telling, and when Samuel comes to 'renew the kingdom' we find him bringing the truth to light. It reminds us of a pattern in the way we deal with God and he deals with us. It is as if two trials take place, one after the other. The people had suggested that it was no longer enough for God to be their king and to operate through prophets like Samuel. So Samuel took the place of an accused person and challenged them to bring charges against him. They exonerated him, implying that the the reason for their troubles did not lie with him or with God. Then he put them in the position of the accused, and reasoned with them about God's 'righteous acts' towards them. It became obvious that the blame lay with them - they had consistently rebelled against their covenant God. Normally verdict is followed by sentence. And when God sent thunder and hail to destroy the harvest they were convicted of their sin and feared for their lives. That is what happens when the Spirit of God convicts us of sin. At Pentecost the people were afraid and perplexed when they realised they had crucified the Christ. It is a common Christian experience. But Samuel told the people not to be afraid. God was ready to forgive for his own sake - because he had chosen them to be his people. Similarly we are offered forgiveness only because of God's choice to save sinners through Christ. That is unconditional. But there is a condition to enjoying covenant blessing - that we do not turn aside but keep the commands of God. 'Be holy, for I am holy'.
