Psalm 2 is clearly a messianic psalm written by David. The apostles of Christ tell us David wrote it when they quote from it in Acts 4:25-26. The psalm speaks of the Messiah or Christ throughout. He is called the anointed of Yahweh in verse 2. The word anointed is Messiah in Hebrew and Christ in Greek. The psalm continues its focus on the Messiah throughout the whole psalm. The Father speaks about His Son the Messiah in verses 4-6. Christ himself is the speaker in verses 7-9. And I think a good case can be made that the Holy Spirit is the speaker in verses 10-12. The main subject throughout this psalm is the Messiah and his rule. The world rejects his reign (1-3) and will not have this man rule over them, but God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit have another world view on the reign of Messiah and it is the counsel and determination of God that stands. Even kings are to reckon with this reality and submit to Yahweh’s king for he is King of kings and he is coming again in great kingdom power and glory. In the meanwhile he is exalted to the very throne of heaven where he rules over history and the hearts of his people who are being saved from the nations. Not surprisingly this psalm is frequently quoted in the NT. It is quoted from at least 4 times and alluded to 14 times in the NT.
Our route will follow Dr. Davis who breaks up the 4 clearly marked sections as follows
-1st-The world that hates (verses 1-3) -2nd-The throne that consoles (verses 4-6) -3rd-The decree that determines (verses 7-9) -4th-The gospel that calls (verses 10-12)
