Let's stand along with Abraham at this viewpoint and look out over the plains of Sodom and Gomorrah after God's judgment has fallen. We see the smoke rising up "like the smoke of a furnace." What are our thoughts? Two things should dominate our minds. (1) Human sinfulness, as antagonistic to God and attracting God's judgment. (2) Divine attributes - holy wrath, patience, and steadfast love. And then we turn around to face the opposite horizon of the future. What are our thoughts? What do we take with us from our consideration of Sodom's doom? We think of the return of Christ, of the great final day of judgment, of the Lord's own counsel that we "remember Lot's wife", and we make sure that we are ready to meet the "wrath to come."
